Clean Blasting Media for Precise Dental Technology
Perfect Surfaces Begin with Perfect Blasting Media
Why Purity Makes the Difference
Fine blasting is a key process in dental technology and plays a crucial role in the quality of surfaces and restorations. However, not all blasting media deliver consistently reliable results. Purity, particle size and storage conditions have a significant impact on precision, efficiency and process reliability in the daily laboratory environment.
Find out in this blog article or on our YouTube channel (@harnischrieth) why the quality of your blasting media plays such an important role.

Why Purity Is Essential
Contaminated or damp blasting media can cause significant problems. Common causes include:
- Moisture absorption due to improper storage
- Inconsistent particle sizes
- Dust or foreign particle contamination
The consequences:
- Clogging of mixing chambers and nozzles, resulting in an inconsistent blasting media flow
- Uncontrolled or uneven surface structures
- Metallic or mineral contamination of the restoration
- Increased processing time and additional costs due to rework
Example of a customer complaint: “Volume and pressure set very high – no abrasive flow”

Analysis of the complaint has shown that the use of standard, non-specialised and contaminated blasting media can cause the mixing chamber or metering housing of sandblasting machines – such as the P-G 400 spot blasting machine – to become blocked.
This significantly impairs or completely blocks the abrasive feed. As a result, users often try to increase the pressure and the blast volume to compensate for the lack of abrasive flow; however, this does not address the root cause and may further impair performance.
The solution lies in high-purity blasting media with a controlled grain size distribution from Harnisch+Rieth
High-quality blasting media with a precise grain structure
High-quality blasting media from Harnisch+Rieth are characterised by:
- Exakt definierte und homogene Korngrößen durch eigene Mehrfachsiebung im Werk
- High material purity
- Low-dust application
- Supplied in tightly sealable bottles with handles
The sealed packaging reliably protects the material from moisture and contamination. The blasting media remains free-flowing thanks to the practical filling spouts, ensuring consistent and reproducible results at all times.
Risks associated with poor-quality blasting media
The use of unsuitable materials can lead to the following problems:
- Irregular surface finish
- Lumping and poor material flow
- Increased wear on nozzles, spray hoses, etc.
- Risk of contamination in the restoration
- Health risks, e.g. from components containing quartz (risk of silicosis)
Recommendations for use to achieve the best results
Please note the following points to ensure safe and efficient use:
Storage in a dry place
Always store blasting media in a dry place and not in areas prone to damp, such as the plaster room.
Optimum operating pressure
An operating pressure of approx. 2–3 bar ensures controlled results that are gentle on the material.
Select the appropriate grain size
- Fine grits for precise and gentle surface finishing
- Coarser grit sizes for scaffolding work and oxide removal
The benefits of high-quality H+R blasting media at a glance
- Maximum precision thanks to a uniform grain structure
- Time saved through reduced rework
- High process reliability thanks to a reliable flow of blasting media
- Equipment-friendly operation thanks to low-dust, homogeneous materials
- High levels of occupational safety through controlled material purity
